First reports from Baghdad of a US military raid of Iranian "government offices in Iraq," detaining five workers
January 11, 2007, 11:38 AM (GMT+02:00)
Iraqi officials report a pre-dawn US raid of Tehran’s diplomatic mission in the northern city of Irbil. They do not specify whether or not similar US raids have been carried out against Iranian precincts in other parts of Iraq. The forces were said to have stormed the Iranian compound, detained five staffers and confiscated computers and documents. There is no US confirmation of the incident.
DEBKAfile notes that the raid or raids follow President George W. Bush’s new strategy of confronting Iran and Syria for "allowing networks to use their territory to attack US forces."
