The Churches Need their Own Nuremberg Trial

Jan 08, 2007 07:33

After Rick Warren's confession that he was a devout member of the Council of Foreign Relations, one might have expected his resignation. But, the archbishop of Warsaw, Stanislaw Wielgus resigned after he was found to have been an informant for the state police.

In American churches, there is no sense of betrayal when the leadership collaborates with government. But the confession in Warsaw has "shaken one of Europe's largest concentrations of devout Catholics."While some of America's Christians try to "free themselves from the totalitarian yoke," the clergy is busy making peace with the enemy and regularly invites them into the pews and pulpits.

When German civil servants truthfully testified that they did their public duty, the Americans killed them. Now that the American civil and religious servants do the same, what shall their judgment be?
