Russian intelligence reported that a US F-16 Fighter had been shot down off the coast of Cuba on Monday, March 12, 2007.

On Tuesday, March 13, 2007, in the same area, the USS San Juan, an LA class submarine got into serious trouble.

"Units of the USS Enterprise Carrier Strike Group saw a red flare in the area where the sub was operating off the coast of Jacksonville, Fla."

They immediately began a search and rescue operation that ended on Wednesday, March 14, 2007.

A red flare indicates the following: Submarine carrying out emergency surfacing procedure; Keep clear, Do not stop propellers, Clear area immediately, Stand by to render assistance.
