Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick was arraigned like Spitzer in a federal case that has no jurisdiction in Michigan, related to the murder of a prostitute. The stripper's family wisely chose a federal court for their case because it was their best hope of abusing the law.
The mayor was very stupid for accepting federal jurisdiction, as the federal court has none for such cases unless he consented. Instead of refusing, he resorted to his ridiculous race based accusation of a "'hate-driven, bigoted assault' against him and vowed to stay in office and fight for sweeping investment plans for the city." He could have thrown the feds out of the city if he had not been as corrupt as the federal judge.
Kilpatrick's first mistake was allowing himself to be brought in on the "$150 million federal lawsuit filed by the family of Greene's son against Kilpatrick and other city officials." Once he conceded jurisdiction, he was certain to lose. On March 18, 2008, the city council correctly stated that they had a constitutional crisis, but it was not the city constitution--They were only children playing government.
Like Spitzer, he was snared by Patriot Act which allowed unlimited spying for anything except Islamic terror. A federal judge gave permission to use electronic intercepts in court for no more reason than, "They could shed light on the murder of an exotic dancer."
At least Spitzer was sniffing at the money trail leading to hedge funds which is why he was "outed" but Kilpatrick is a typical inner city hound with no objective except to steal and spend somebody else's money. Except for interest of the prostitute's family, the feds did not initiate this prostitution of the constitution. But like Spitzer, Kilpatrick deserves the abuse of the state that he helped corrupt.
